Hmm, nothing has changed since entering preservation, and faces neglect from what i hear!
[#8814165] 2009-03-14 08:08:48 Left by Steven Peters (#1081930) Reply
We've got brand new lino, upholstery, skirting, panels, plastic and rubber trim, original back lights, front fog lights, ticket machine, blinds, interior adverts and glass for this machine - I'd hardly call that neglect. Plus the days and cost of going to fetch all these bits! It hardly needs rebuilding again since it has only done 4 years service since a major overhaul, and only ran with TWM for 6 months after its last repaint. We've also got a National to finish restoring and another Lynx that is in desperate need of a body overhaul, both of which need parts sourcing, fetching and paying for before we start taking 1292 to bits for 10 years. We had 2 buses on the road last year and we went to less than 10 rallies between them. Is it really worth spending £250 extra on insurance, £100 on tax and x amount on fueling it up just to take to 3 or 4 rallies when that money could be better spent on restoration? So, rest assured that 1292 won't be neglected, and will eventually be restored to "as new" condition. We just have a lot to do and there's only 2 of us, and much restoration time on the National has been lost spending time on mechanical problems with "on the road" vehicles. So keeping it to one bus on the road per year will hopefully get the National finished sooner, as it's been off the road since 2002.

if memory serves they were transferred to BC for the 56 [City Centre - Olton Station via Coventry Road], which went under a low bridge at Olton Station. after a short period, the 56 was transferred to Your Bus [as 56Y] in exchange for the 57Y [which became the 57A and could be operated with deckers].

TOE 518N must have been its intended registration, but something must have held it up as it entered service later than the rest of its batch, with the change in registration system occurring in the meantime.

1822 ended up in similar condition at Wolverhampton. incidentally, i notice you've not got any photos of Nationals in Wolverhampton [at least, i've not seen any so far], and yet there were several there in the mid 90s. did you avoid Wolverhampton deliberately?

at this time, the 243 was operated from Wolverhampton by interworking it with the 558 [the 264/265 being run on a similar basis]. because of a low bridge on the 243, this meant half of the daytime service on the 558 was single deck, giving me many happy journeys on Nationals. thank you for this little trip along memory route.

my lords! i recall hearing in about 1994 that Wolverhampton had won the Centro tender to run the evening and Sunday service on the 83/84 [Birmingham city centre - Hawkesley via Bournville], but i never got to see it. thank you for recording the scene for posterity. [i think Wolverhampton also operated some journeys on the 1 and 6 at odd times for similar reasons. they also got the Shropshire tender for the Sunday services on the 891 from Wolves to Wellington, including a couple of journeys that began in Shrewsbury, and the 1, a Telford local service, and the Staffs tender for the 580 from Kinver to Kidderminster on Thursdays and Saturdays. they registered the 580 commercially between Wolverhampton and Kinver, and between Kidderminster and Bewdley so they'd have somewhere to park the bus between journeys.]

no earthquake. this is a photo taken when my camera's battery was virtually flat. i hadn't enough power to adjust the settings as it kept switching off. it was a case of turn on, click, battery goes flat. typical of modern technology deciding what's best for the user. i'd had the camera set up for moving targets all day, but because of the battery problem that day, the camera reset itself to default settings. still, an interesting photo of 1080 if nothing else - looks like someone was dreaming of lynx!

Thanks for the comment about 2847. The photo was taken in 1996 somewhere in Shropshire, just before it relocated. The farm hasn't kept buses for several years - this bus being one of the last to leave. Not sure where it's kept these days, it's relocated a few times in recent years.

[#8606491] 2007-02-06 21:20:06 Left by Steven Peters (#1081930) Reply
unfortunately don't know which gemini this was. it broke down heading north up lichfield road in birmingham, just after the flyover. the offside wheel assembly came undone and was unable to be driven forward, so had to be escorted by police backwards on a tow truck in the wrong direction over the flyover.

I drove this bus several times a week, it was one of my favourites, 1216, 1290 and 1299, all good buses, smooth, fast, and great to drive.. its good to see its being preserved, Even better since you have ot on the route i worked 27/35.. I look forward to seeing the bus at some rallies this year.. many thanks... paul

Glad you appreciate 1292 appearing on the rally scene, and to hear that a driver enjoyed driving it! We chose 1292 as our local routes are the 27 and 35, and wanted one that had spent a lot of time at YW. I believe it spent around 10 years in total there, having spent its early years at DY and a few months at AG.
